Resumo: Created in 1755, the parish of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda da Ilha do Governador integrated, during the nineteenth century, the “freguesias de fora” [outside parishes] or “suburbanas” [suburbans parishes] of the city, and the main economic activities were fishing and lime production. In this article, we address everyday aspects of the life of slaves and free workers of Ilha do Governador in the context of Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century.
