Resumo: The objective of this article is to show the contribution of The democracy of America in the writings of Tavares Bastos (1839-1875), which depicts the school as an indispensable environment for the construction of national unity and identity, as well as discusses education as a form of integrating the immigrant into the Brazilian society. Such themes were also dealt with by Aléxis de Tocqueville in his study of North-American society. It is noticeable that Tavares Bastos makes use of the ideas defended by Tocqueville, especially regarding political-administrative reorganization, the importance of the juridical apparatus, that should give support to the country’s institutions, and, fi nally, the defense of social welfare, civic education, and freedom, also defended by Tavares Bastos (1975).

It is noticeable that Tavares Bastos makes use of the ideas defended by Tocqueville, especially regarding political-administrative reorganization, the importance of the juridical apparatus, that should give support to the country’s institutions, and, fi nally, the defense of social welfare, civic education, and freedom, also defended by Tavares Bastos (1975). Neste artigo, objetiva-se demonstrar a contribuição que A democracia na América propiciou aos escritos de Tavares Bastos (1839-1875), no que se refere à escola como um ambiente indispensável à formação da unidade e identidade nacional e à discussão da educação como uma forma de integrar o imigrante à sociedade brasileira, temas também abordados por Aléxis de Tocqueville, no estudo realizado sobre a sociedade norte-americana.
