Resumo: An analysis on the Colégio Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Bento Gonçalves RS Brazil is provided between 1956, the year of the establishment of the college, and 1972, when LDB 5.692/1971 was implemented. Current research contributes towards the history of educational institutions through an investigation of school culture and the college´s identity process. Methodology comprised written records, photographs and the oral history of alumni, former teachers and local residents. Results showed that the college´s identity stance comprised a predominance of Italian ethnicity, changes in pedagogical work and in its physical structure, and Catholic teaching foregrounding teaching practices.

Abarca el período de 1956, año de la creación del colegio, hasta 1972, con la aplicación de la LDB 5.692 / 71. El objetivo de esta investigación sobre la cultura escolar y el proceso identitario del colegio es contribuir para la investigación en historia de las instituciones escolares. Con relación a la metodología, utilizamos registros escritos, fotografías y la historia oral de ex-alumnos, ex-profesores y residentes de la región. A partir del análisis, llegamos a la conclusión de que el proceso identitario del colegio presenta algunas notas distintivas, tales como: predominio de la etnia italiana, cambio en el trabajo pedagógico y en la estructura física, y la enseñanza católica como guía de prácticas pedagógicas.O artigo apresenta resultados de uma pesquisa sobre o Colégio Sagrado Coração de Jesus, de Bento Gonçalves/RS. Abrange o período de 1956, ano da criação do colégio, até 1972, com a implementação da LDB 5.692/71. O objetivo dessa investigação sobre a cultura escolar e o processo identitário do colégio é contribuir para a pesquisa em história das instituições escolares. Em relação à metodologia, utilizamos registros escritos, fotografias e a história oral de ex-alunos, ex-professores e moradores da região.
