History of higher education in Mato Grosso: from the frustrated initiatives to the creation of a university system

Resumo: In order to visualize the installation of the first institutions of higher education in the former state of Mato Grosso, it was necessary to look at the changes that occurred in the educational field occurred in the national context. The discussion, based on bibliographical research of memorialist and academic works, seeks to focus on the experiences of construction of higher education institutions in the state of Mato Grosso in the 1960s and reaches the period of state division in 1977. In this way, we present an information grid that allows us to understand the process of creation of the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso and the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul. The southern portion of the former Mato Grosso was very dynamic than the northern part in the promotion of the first schools of higher education. The institutionalization of higher education schools occurred in a national context that favored their internalization process, these schools led by local leaders, liberal professionals who used the discourse to promote regional modernization, with the objective of to acquire power and recognition with initiatives undertaken in the educational field. Already the role of the university system was, essentially, a premium of the local manpower.

La discusión, basada en la investigación bibliográfica de trabajos memorialistas y académicos, busca concentrarse en las experiencias de construcción de las instituciones de enseñanza superior del estado de Mato Grosso, en la década de 1960, y alcanza el período de la división del estado, ocurrida en el año 1977. De este modo, se expone una rejilla de informaciones que permite entender el proceso de creación de la Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso y de la Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul. En ese punto, se defiende que la porción sur del antiguo Mato Grosso fue más dinámica que la parte norte en la promoción de las primeras escuelas de enseñanza superior. La institucionalización de escuelas de enseñanza superior ocurrió en un contexto nacional que favorecía su proceso de interiorización, escuelas encabezadas por líderes locales, profesionales liberales que se utilizaban del discurso de la promoción de la modernización regional para adquirir poder y reconocimiento con las iniciativas emprendidas en el campo educativo. El papel del sistema universitario era, esencialmente, la calificación de la mano de obra local. A fim de se visualizar a instalação das primeiras instituições de ensino superior no antigo Estado de Mato Grosso, foi necessário um olhar sobre as mudanças do campo educacional ocorridas no contexto nacional. A discussão, embasada em pesquisa bibliográfica de trabalhos memorialistas e acadêmicos, busca se concentrar nas experiências da construção de instituições de ensino superior no Estado de Mato Grosso, na década de 1960, e alcança o período da divisão do Estado, ocorrida no ano de 1977. Desse modo, expõe-se uma grade de informações que permite se entender o processo de criação da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso e da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul. Nesse ponto, defende-se que a porção sul do antigo Mato Grosso foi mais dinâmica do que a parte norte na promoção das primeiras escolas de ensino superior. A institucionalização de escolas de ensino superior ocorreu em um contexto nacional que favorecia o seu processo de interiorização, escolas essas encabeçadas por lideranças locais, profissionais liberais que se utilizavam do discurso da promoção da modernização regional para adquirirem poder e reconhecimento com as iniciativas empreendidas no campo educacional.
