The theoretical debate we will develop in this paper aims to contribute to a dynamic, multidimensional view of the knowledge production process targeted at economic innovation. Based on the assumption that the structure of knowledge production is changing, several theoretical contributions on knowledge production processes are explored, aimed at building a proposal to interpret the spaces of knowledge places and flows, in other words, to interpret the networks of knowledge places. We will analyse the debate on the territorial dimension of knowledge production, transfer and dissemination with a potential for economic innovation, highlighting approaches that tend to abandon the tacit/proximity codified/distance relation, and the development of more complex interpretations, of variable geometries in terms of the spatiality of the processes associated to knowledge. We put forward a multidimensional approach to the analysis of knowledge and a taxonomic proposal of knowledge networks that takes into account the diversity of flows and the spaces of the places involved. We also consider the theoretical possibility that the knowledge production process is increasingly structured into polygamous, exogamous and multi-scalar networks.
