Approaches towards disability policies in Portugal have experienced profound changes over the course of the last thirty-five years. Current literature indicates that academia in Portugal has only fairly recently begun to explore the significance of studies in disability from cultural studies or disability studies perspectives, as opposed to other more well-established fields of study like history and sociology. While Cultural Studies leant towards a worldwide or national understanding of culture, disability studies questioned whether “a single identity of disability was sufficient to identify a culture, and, if so, what the parameters of that culture might be” (Davis and Drazen 2011: 1014). However, disability is very different to race, religion or gender as it can be easily changeable. The aim of this paper is to present and analyse the diverse perspectives of disability in Portugal with distinctly different socio-economic, political, cultural and historical experiences.
