Resumo: The experience we have as a teacher in Higher Education, a supervisor of teacher training anda researcher led us to be aware of problems resulting from the image of Portuguese languagein today’s world. This issue is especially relevant in what concerns Education in Portuguese takinginto account the influence of the image of the mother tongue promoted by its teaching/learningprocess over the way Portuguese citizens use it in their social praxis.These reflections made us do several exploratory studies (inspired by a matrix-study) focused onthe identification of the conceptions of early childhood educators and teachers on the valueof Portuguese language in today’s world. In these studies, done with the collaboration of otherresearchers, we gathered data through a questionnaire (produced within the matrix-study) whichwere the object of content analysis complemented by descriptive statistics (absolute and relativefrequencies), whenever needed.In this text, we compare the conceptions of the three publics and conclude they are rather similar(although they refer to future and in-service professionals) and have important consequences(sometimes negative) concerning the teaching/learning of the mother tongue. Consequently, it’surgent to try to change them within teacher education processes.

Consequently, it’surgent to try to change them within teacher education processes.Notre expérience en tant que professeur de l’université, superviseur de stages pédagogiques et chercheur nous ont amenée à prendre conscience de problèmes découlant de l’image de la langue portugaise dans le monde actuel. Ce topique est spécialement important dans le cadre de l’Éducation en Portugais, tenant compte de l’influence que l’image de la langue maternelle véhiculée par son enseignement/apprentissage peut avoir sur la façon dont les citoyens en font usage dans leur praxis sociale. Ces réflexions nous ont amenée à entreprendre des études exploratrices (inspirées d’une étudematrice) centrées sur les représentations d’éducateurs de la petite enfance, instituteurs et professeurs sur la valeur actuelle de la langue portugaise. Dans ces études, que nous avons entreprises avec la collaboration d’autres chercheurs, on a recueilli des données à travers l’application d’un questionnaire (construit dans le cadre de l’étude-matrice), qui ont fait l’objet d’une analyse de contenu complémentée par de la statistique descriptive (fréquences absolues et relatives) quand cela s’avérait nécessaire. Dans ce texte, nous comparons les représentations des trois publics et nous concluons qu’elles se ressemblent beaucoup (malgré le fait qu’ils incluent des professionnels en formation et d’autres en service) et qu’elles ont des conséquences importantes (des fois négatives) pour l’enseignement/ apprentissage de la langue maternelle, ce qui rend urgente une intervention au niveau de la formation.As nossas vivências como docente do Ensino Superior, orientadora da prática pedagógica supervisionada e investigadora levaram-nos a tomar consciência de problemas decorrentes da imagem da língua portuguesa no mundo atual. Essa questão levanta-se com particular interesse no âmbito da Educação em Português, tendo em conta a influência que a imagem da língua materna veiculada através do seu ensino/aprendizagem pode ter sobre a forma como os cidadãos fazem uso dela na sua práxis social. Estas considerações levaram-nos à realização de estudos exploratórios (inspirados num estudomatriz) centrados na identificação de representações de educadores de infância e professores de vários níveis de ensino sobre o valor atual da língua portuguesa. Nesses vários estudos, que concretizámos com a colaboração de outros investigadores, recolhemos dados a partir da aplicação de um questionário (produzido no âmbito do estudo-matriz), que submetemos a análise de conteúdo, complementada por estatística descritiva (frequências absolutas e relativas), sempre que necessário.
