Ojectives: to explore the relationship between the psychopathological symptoms, psychopathy, self-compassion, traumatic experiences and social desirability in a sample of portuguese inmates; to verify if psychopathy and traumatic experiences are risk factors for psychopathological symptoms; to verify if self-compassion mediates the relationship between psychopathy and psychopathological symptoms; to verify if social desirability mediates the relationship between traumatic experiences and psychopathological symptoms. Method: The sample is made up by 128 portuguese, male inmates, from 3 Portuguese Prision Establishments, with a mean age of 37,84 years old (DP = 10,4). All the participants filled an informed consent declaration and a test battery, including the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), Levenson?s Self Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRPS), Self Compassion Scale (SCS), Traumatic Experiencies Checklist (TEC) and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSDS). Results: Self-compassion doesn't totally mediate the relationship between primary psychopathy and psychopathological symptoms. On the contrary, the tested model in which social desirability is presented as a mediator of the relationship between traumatic experiences and psychopathological symptoms has revealed a total positive mediator effect. In portuguese inmates, the general symptom index correlates, positively, with secondary psychopathy, the traumatic experiences and social desirability, negatively, with selfcompassion. Whereas the primary psychopathy only correlates , in a positive way, with secondary psychopathy. Traumatic experiences positively correlate with social desirability. Conclusion: Even though there is no mediator effect, the development of self-compassion seems to be useful in this population, due to the high number of traumatic experiences, psychopathological symptoms and to the existence of psychopathy traces. The social desirability variable stood out in this population. |
