Resumo: In the context of the Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2015/2016, at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT), general considerations are made in respect to training, teaching and learning and research. The history of IHMT is addressed in a superficial way. Considerations are made in respect to the North- -South inequality and uneven social and economic development of their people with a great disadvantage for the ones at the tropics. In the search of the global agenda of different civil societies, on both sides, the scientific community is probably the structure that better reflects the ideal of such societies. However, the gap between rich and poor countries persists. For this reason it is important to develop collaborative studies and training based on a genuine cooperation. The heroism, audacity and stoicism of the researchers of the tropical countries is highlighted. Therefore, a constant opening to the world and privileged collaboration with all the institutions that value knowledge, quality, equity, solidarity, innovation and a solid ethical behavior must be maintained and developed
