Resumo: This article points out the discursive limitations in attempts to report communication contacts between explorers in the service of the King of Portugal and native inhabitants of the place known as the New World. Such reports, produced by Europeans for Europeans and constructed in reported speech form, may prove to be quite unreliable and yet have influenced several areas of knowledge regarding the Amerindian peoples.
