Resumo: Electrical soundings, sometimes called vertical electrical soundings (VES), can be used in areas of complex geology, where pronouced orientational variation of resistivity measurements can be encountered. However, even in the circinstances, it is usual to use bo the field and interpretation techniques developed for models in which resistivity measurements vary with depth only. The present paper discusses and illustrates with field and model data the difficulties inherent to such aproach when carrying out and interpreting resistivity soundings in areas of complex geology. Then, alternative techniques more suitable to use in these areas reviewed and discussed. Finally, economical aspects on the use of these alternative techniques are discussed.

Finally, economical aspects on the use of these alternative techniques are discussed.Sondagens eléctricas, por vezes chamadas sondagens eléctricas verticais (SEV), têm sido usadas em áreas de geologia complexa, onde a resistividade do terreno pode variar acentuadamente com a direcção do dispositivo electródico de medida. No enatanto, mesmo nestes casos, é costume usar técnicas, quer de campo quer de interpretação, desenvolvidas para situações em que a resistividade dos terrenos só varia com a profundida. No presente artigo as dificuldade inerentes a tal prática são analisadas e ilustradas usando quer dados de campo quer dados provenientes de simulação sobre modelos reduzidos. Em seguida são apresentadas e discutidas técnicas alternativas aplicáveis a áreas em que a resistividade varia com a orientação.
