The Role of Visual Arts Teaching in the Built Environment Education

At least since the 1970s, some art/educators have been developing proposals to explore the aesthetic dimension of architecture and the city in teaching the visual arts. Despite being relevant and urgent, the theme did not win a large number of followers, being limited to a small group of enthusiasts. In other areas of knowledge, interest in the aesthetic experience of the built environment has been re-emerging due to empirical research that proves the profound impact of the physical environment on our physical and emotional well-being. Among contemporary architects and urban planners, there is a growing concern with the gradual process of perceptual atrophy, at the same time as recommendations for the resensualization of architecture and the reintroduction of the human dimension in the planning of urban spaces are discussed. Given this scenario, it is worth asking how art education can incorporate Education in the Built Environment to its agenda. This article seeks answers to that question.
