The Oman Drilling Project carried out extensive scientific drilling, among which, hole GT3 (400 m) aimed at characterizing magmatic and hydrothermal processes at the sheeted dike-gabbro transition zone (DGT). This work presents a study of sulphur geochemistry and stable isotopes with the purpose of understanding the role of the DGT as the source of metals and sulphur in the origin of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits such as those found in the volcanic section of the Semail ophiolite. Samples were also characterized mineralogically and petrographically to determine hydrothermal alteration features. This study revealed a near complete overprint of most magmatic minerals, during three alteration stages which follow a retrograde metamorphic path from high temperature, amphibolitic facies, to widespread greenschist facies and low temperature prehnite to zeolite facies. Sulphur mobility was predominantly enabled during the medium temperature alteration stage. Sulphur stable isotopes revealed δ34S values mostly falling between 5.1‰ and 13.6‰, with two anomalous values of -0.5‰ and -12.8‰. The obtained values suggest that the sulphur in the hydrothermal fluid is the result of simple two component mixing between magmatic sources and sulphur derived from the thermochemical reduction of seawater sulphate, with seawater contributions between 23.7–73.7% and an weighted average of 41%. Sulphur leaching estimates, obtained from the comparison of estimated magmatic sulphur concentrations and measured sulphur concentrations, revealed an overall loss of sulphur with measured concentrations averaging at 27.4% of the estimated magmatic sulphur concentration (excluding two locally constrained very high concentrations).
