Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the impact of laboratory procedures for air void content determination on the design and mechanical performance of an asphalt mixture. A dense-graded AC20 and gap-graded SMA12.5 mixtures were designed using empirical and volumetric design methods. Volumetric properties are determined based on several bulk gravity procedures: dry, SSD (saturated surface dry), paraffin coated, vacuum-sealed and dimensions. Relationships between the mixtures designed with bulk specific gravity procedures and their performance made it possible to analyze the impact of these procedures on the properties and performance of the mixtures. Global performance variations were relevant, although the differences were moderate considering the common procedures (less than 10%). Impact on a determined performance property can be considerable, with variations up to 70%. For specific applications, this can have a significant effect on the overall in-service performance.
