Resumo: Since the first cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were reported in the city of Wuhan, China, globally, during the pandemic, countries experienced waves of SARS-CoV-2 infections, with a significant impact on COVID-19 morbidity and mortality, due to the worrying variants of circulating viruses that have emerged over time, including Mozambique. In addition to public health measures taken since the initial stages of the pandemic, such as case identification and isolation, closure of schools and gathering places, social distancing, and personal and collective hygiene and protection measures, national COVID-19 vaccination programs have been put in place, globally and in the country. With the introduction of vaccination, it was hoped to achieve more effective control of the pandemic. However, this has not happened, some challenges remain. Thus, in this article, based on a review of documents and epidemiological data available on digital platforms, the evolution of the epidemic in Mozambique is described and compared to the African continent and the world in general, and some of the possible explanations for the observed evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic are presented. On the other hand, some considerations are presented around the progress made and the challenges that persist in the country and at the global level with the introduction of the COVID-19 vaccination program.
