This dissertation aims to study the work of Dilson Gestal Pereira, an architect from Rio de Janeiro, born in 1934, particularly significant in the 1960s and 1970s, in the so-called post-Brasília period. Based on the recognition of the importance of his work, which is currently scarcely contemplated, an analysis of certain projects in their historical and theoretical context is presented in order to highlight the urgency of further studies and preservation. Its significant urban aspect makes the work inseparable from the carioca context and its landscape, calling for a review of some of the most important episodes of the public architecture in Rio, in which the architect participated directly and indirectly, particularly during the period in which he's employed by the State Government. Based on sparse documentation, where perspectives predominate, probable references and design continuities are sought in order to elucidate the architect's thinking process throughout his heterogeneous work - an effect of the theoretical instability at the time. At a time of navigation between the already exhausted modern architecture, an elusive brutalism and the post-modern, Gestal's work illustrates the transition between the prestigious past of national architecture, which culminates in Brasilia, and a new phase in which the definition of the brazilian identity* in architecture is being updated. The latter corresponds to one of the least studied moments in the historiography of recent Brazilian architecture, marked by several new expressions such as that of Gestal, but dominated by the brutalism of São Paulo. Thus, within its limitations, this study aims to contribute to the clarification and dissemination of yet another valuable fragment of this intriguing period of Brazilian architecture.
