Effect on the energy efficiency and plant development. ABSTRACT: The most recent forecasts for world population points to 9.7 billion people by 2050. This scenario demonstrates that more efficient production systems will be needed, like the plant growth units. In these units, production takes place in a fully controlled environment, using artificial light. The main constraint of these systems is the high energy consumption. However, the replacement of fluorescent lighting by LEDs has significantly reduced this input. Nevertheless, information about the response of plants to this type of light is scarce. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the response of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and spinach (Spinacea oleracea) to two different light sources. In this work, we used a plant growth chamber equipped either with fluorescent light or white LEDs. The best production was achieved with the use of fluorescent lighting, the best cost benefit relation was obtained with the use of LED lighting. |
