Resumo: In 19th century legal studies (e.g. Frauenstädt, 1881), blood revenge is referred to as the original form of legal practice and considered to be the first step of man towards the full rule of law during the early stages of social development. In medieval literature, blood revenge represents an important theme and through an analysis of Wolfram von Eschenbach's Willehalm (one of the most important works of medieval German literature) the often very problematic relationship between revenge and justice is discussed.
