Resumo: | Universities face today new challenges as they have to deal with an increasing number of disabled students attending their curricula. In Portugal, Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are still not prepared, as teaching and non-teaching staff face serious difficulties interpreting accessibility guidelines, a deficit of experience and training in this area and are not aware of the importance of their actions to provide propper accommodations. This paper presents the findings of the first national initiative on a Portuguese HEI, based entirely on TIC, to help implementing an inclusive curriculum. We developed an online course on accessibility and inclusion and we observed that staff reveals a great deal of difficulties working with disabled students, but also their will to learn how to adapt their curricula and work methods to this new reality. In conclusion, new courses and workshops on these subjects will have to be developed at the U.Porto in order to reach a more diverse audience and thus contributing to build a barrier free community where all students can feel included. |
