Resumo: In this article international/universal exhibitions are studied as successful phenomena for the past century and a half (1851-1998). They are social events par excellence which mobilise a great number of people throughout the world. Some of the most outstanding phenomena in contemporary history have been taking place in these exhibitions, for instance: business relationships and competitiveness; nationalisms and ideologies; innovation, publicity and marketing; science and technology; power and show business; urbanization and recovering of urban areas. In spite of being limited, Portugal participated in this process holding two exhibitions: Oporto in 1865 and Lisbon in 1998 (EXPO'98).

Elles sont des événements sociaux par excellence et mobilisent de nombreuses personnes dans le monde entier. Quelques uns des phénomènes les plus remarquables de l 'histoire contemporaine ont eu lieu dans ces expositions: les rapports commerciaux et la compétitivité; les nationalismes et les idéologies; l 'innovation, la publicité et le marketing; la science et la technologie; le pouvoir et le spectacle; l 'urbanisation et la récupération des zones urbaines. Malgré quelques limitations, Portugal a participé au processus mentionné en organisant deux expositions: en 1865 à Porto et en 1998 à Lisbonne (EXPO'98).Neste artigo estudam-se as exposições internacionais/universais, como fenómeno de sucesso, ao longo de cerca de século e meio (1851-1998). Acontecimentos sociais por excelência, mobilizando grandes massas populacionais por todo o mundo, pelas referidas exposições têm passado alguns dos fenómenos mais marcantes da história contemporânea, de entre os quais se destacam os seguintes: relações comerciais e competitividade; nacionalismos e ideologias; inovação, publicidade e "marketing"; ciência e tecnologia; poder e espectáculo; urbanização e recuperação de zonas urbanas.
