Resumo: The importance of urinary tract infections in children is due to their high prevalence, as well as being markers for urinary tract functional and structural anomalies, congenital or acquired. They may also cause hypertension and chronic renal failure. The investigation of children with urinary tract infection implies several medical consultations, the use of multiple antibiotics, somewhat invasive investigations and high costs. Thus the diagnosis must be adequately made, through the culture of a properly taken urine sample, as a means to avoid false positive diagnoses and unnecessary investigations and treatments. The correct diagnosis and early treatment reduce the risk of permanent renal lesion and its consequences.

The correct diagnosis and early treatment reduce the risk of permanent renal lesion and its consequences.
