Resumo: This paper examines whether differences in labour market institutions can generate the employment, wage dispersion and productivity differences between the United States and Europe in the last decades. We find that different search/matching efficiencies can account for the different employment and productivity equilibria of the two continents, and that differences in minimum wages in this framework can generate responses to skill-unbiased technology shocks that mimic the dynamic evolution of the two economies.
