Resumo: Published in the 1930s, Ferreira de Castro’s The Jungle is one of the ten most widely read novels in the world. Adapted for the cinema in 2002 by director Leonel Vieira, it tells the story of Alberto, a young Portuguese monarchist who finds himself exiled in the Amazon jungle, full of danger, beauty and challenges for those who have left Portugal in search of a different future. After briefly outlining the beginning of the novel, this article aims to study, based on Edgar Morin’s work Le cinéma ou l’homme imaginaire, how cinema has changed reality and also works of fiction, in this case in particular, using the example of The Jungle. The aim is to discover the Hollywood part of Ferreira de Castro’s novel, through the lens of filmmaker Leonel Vieira’s camera, bearing in mind that many passages written in the novel have been altered by the plot of the film. As we have seen with the alleged carnal consumption of the protagonist, or with the creation of a new character (Velasco), in the film, to satisfy the conceptions of co-production of the three countries involved in the project: Portugal, Spain and Brazil, to name but a few examples. The methodology used in the article favours the use of qualitative techniques aimed at cross-referencing sources and documentary analysis of the works in question, establishing a parallel with the film by the Portuguese director. Thus, following this exhibition, an initial question is proposed that will guide this reflection: “What are the differences between Leonel Vieira’s film The Jungle and the literary work by Ferreira de Castro that gave birth to it?”
