Resumo: The urban sprawl is commonly associated with the emergence of territorial problems such as the exaggerated consumption of land, water and energy, the poor cost-benefit ratio for the implementation of urban infrastructures, and the increase of distances necessary for daily mobility. Such a model of sprawling urbanization, in a context of socioeconomic inequality such as the Brazilian one, tends to be even more aggravated for the poorest strata of the population. Based on this conceptual apparatus, this article aimed to analyze the recent expansion of Regional Tatuquara, located in the extreme southern part of the municipal limits of Curitiba, which has been the main vector of urban expansion in this Metropolitan Area since the 1990s. It is identified the predominance of a discontinuous urban morphology in relation to the main metropolitan urban fabric, consisting mostly of horizontal subdivisions and isolated housing complexes that encourage the fragmentation of urban space. It concludes that this urbanization model is linked to an explicit distancing strategy of the areas destined for social housing by the existing urban plans.
