End of the Ancien Regime in Portugal: Inquisition and Religious Intolerance

Even after the Pombaline reforms, which particularly affected the power of the Church, the end of the Ancien Regime in Portugal was characterized by religious intolerance and fanaticism; the symbiosis political power/Church, to which the Inquisition and the Intendência da Polícia gave expression, would remain until 1820 with devastating effects on the organization of the society and, most particularly, in the field of education and cultural experience, despite the new Enlightenment winds that blew particularly from revolutionary France. This article, based on a hermeneutic analysis of texts of foreign travelers who demanded Portugal after the fall of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, intends to prove that, despite all the external pressures and the political and religious anachronism, only the 1820 Liberal Revolution would put an end to almost three centuries of a governing model in which it was not known where the State ended and the Church began.
