Remote sensing: possibilities for a dynamic and integrated approach to the urban ecosystem

Resumo: The limited existence of continuous spatiotemporal data always imposed considerable restrictions on transversal and diachronic approaches to the urban phenomenon. However, recent technological advances daily increase colossal databases with explicit geographic information (e.g., satellites, social networks, official data), enabling the multiplication of case studies. So, the deductive logic, hegemonic until then, is replaced by the inductive one. This approach applied from bottom-up perspective highlights local particularisms. Born even before the splendidness of 'Big Data', the synoptic and repetitive view of the Earth provided by Remote Sensing constitutes a key element in the reinterest and in the methodological and conceptual renewal of Urban Studies verified in the begin of the new millennium. In particular, the chronogeographic focus that is given to studies of urban morphology. Along with this, satellites multispectral view provides diverse information (e.g., soil moisture, surface temperature, pollution), which extends far beyond the mere extraction of urban fabric. In this sense, we seek to highlight the mutations that Remote Sensing - anchored on Geographic Information Systems - promoted in the Urban Studies. We focus on Geography domain were the integrated approach of the urban ecosystem is maximized.

Todavia, avanços tecnológicos, mais ou menos recentes, que diariamente incrementam colossais bases de dados com informação geográfica explícita (e.g., satélites, redes sociais, dados oficiais), vieram possibilitar a desmultiplicação dos estudos de caso. Com efeito, a lógica dedutiva, hegemónica até então, é substituída pela indutiva – que desenvolvida no sentido bottom-up veio colocar em evidência particularismos locais. Nascida ainda antes do apogeu dos ‘Big Data’, a observação sinótica e repetitiva da Terra facultada pela Deteção Remota assume uma importância fulcral no (re)interesse e na renovação metodológica e concetual dos Estudos Urbanos verificada no advento do novo milénio – mormente o enfoque cronogeográfico que é dado aos estudos de morfologia urbana. A par disto, importa notar que a visão multiespectral dos satélites fornece variegada informação (e.g., humidade do solo, temperatura de superfície, poluentes), que se estende muito para além da mera extração do tecido urbano.
