This work addresses the theme of the problematic of intervention in historical heritage, supported by the Paço de Giela as a case study, a monument of medieval architecture that requires urgent care at the level of safeguarding, at the risk of being lost, due to it's advanced state of ruin. This way, the study centers on the medieval civil architecture, exploiting the specific constraints of Paço de Giela, which can be summarized in the following words: ruin, monument, language and function, around which there will be built a theoretical and reflective framework that would support a possible action with the purpose of preventing the disappearance of this historic testimonial. The development of this work, after the characterization of the case study in a first phase, aims to understand the evolution of the theory of conservation, realizing what approaches throughout history will shape the practice towards heritage conservation. The currents of thought, often opposite to each other, allow an understanding of the evolution of the criteria for intervention and conservation of monuments. The recommendations of the restoration charters, containing possibilities -as they are not rigid-admit that each case is unique, and that the practice of conservation, not generalized, should bear from the analysis and interpretation of each work, based on a thorough and complete knowledge of the building in case. From here, the analysis of case studies that were understood as related to the subject was used, in order to seek answers to the questions that were raised along the way, and developing a discourse around the concepts mentioned above, parallel to the case study.
