Resumo: | This dissertation is the result of an extensive theoretical research, associated with the academic work made by myself in 2010, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. It focuses on mining settlements in Northern Chile, through their history, architecture and urban planning.Firstly, I analyse the paradigmatic cases of cities designed in the context of the ideal city model, for better understanding of the emergence of Company Towns, cities whose sole purpose is the profitability of Industry, which allows us to understand the appearance of these Chilean settlements which are subject to the extreme climatic conditions of the driest desert in the world. With greater depth, I analyse the case of the settlement María Elena, which is the main object of study of this dissertation, and represents the last nitrate town still governed by the basic principles of the Company Towns - towns in which "The Company" owns all land, homes, equipment and at same time, is the employer of most of its inhabitants. My main goal is to create a storyline that brings the absolute understanding of the current living conditions that María Elena is enduring at this point, and to propose a future in which the city would be self-sufficient, both architecturally and culturally, through social and economic development. |
