The Pandemic City and the Ecological Collapse

Resumo: The current situation forces us to think about the fact that epidemics are ecological and evolutionary phenomena, but that, throughout most of the human adventure, they happened in relatively stable planetary condition. Now, living an era of ecological collapse, the scenario is very different. The places we inhabit have become pandemic cities that have accumulated crises. The current coronavirus crisis is just one more of them. As a category of contemporary analysis, the Pandemic City is nothing more than a hybrid between nature and culture.  Its origin lies in the choice between continuing on the path of modernizing momentum or stopping, reflecting and creating new ways to regain the world in which we live. This is the subject proposed by this article: it analyses what leads us to maintain the pandemic state of the city, something fundamental to overcome not only the current crisis, but to avoid future and much bigger crises.

Ahora, viviendo una época de colapso ecológico, el escenario es muy diferente. Los lugares que habitamos se han convertido en ciudades pandémicas que han acumulado crisis. La actual crisis del coronavirus es una más de ellas. Como categoría de análisis contemporánea, la Ciudad Pandémica no es más que un híbrido entre naturaleza y cultura.  Su origen está en la elección entre continuar en la senda del impulso modernizador o detenerse, reflexionar y crear nuevas formas de recuperar el mundo en el que vivimos. Este es el tema que propone este artículo: analiza, a través de un enfoque socioambiental, lo que nos lleva a mantener el estado pandémico de la ciudad, algo fundamental para superar no sólo la crisis actual, sino para evitar crisis futuras y mucho mayores.  A conjuntura atual nos obriga a refletir sobre o fato de que epidemias são fenômenos ecológicos e evolutivos, mas que, ao longo da maior parte da aventura humana, aconteceram em situações planetárias relativamente estáveis. Agora, na era do colapso ecológico, o cenário é muito diferente. Os locais que habitamos se transformaram em cidades pandêmicas que acumularam crises. A atual crise do novo coronavírus é apenas mais uma delas. Enquanto categoria de análise da contemporaneidade, a Cidade Pandêmica nada mais é do que um híbrido entre natureza e cultura. Ou seja, está fundamentada na atual “falta de mundo” e no impasse entre modernizar e ecologizar, este último apresentado diversas vezes ao longo do último ano como um falso dilema entre “salvar vidas ou salvar a economia”. Sua origem está na escolha entre continuar na trilha do ímpeto modernizador ou parar, refletir e criar novas formas de reavermos o mundo em que vivemos.
