Profiling Persistent Asthma Phenotypes in AdolescentsA Longitudinal Diagnostic Evaluation from the INSPIRERS Studiesasthmaadolescentsphenotypesclusteringlongitudinal studieslatent class analysisSDG 3 - Good Health and Well-beingFunding: This research was funded by ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) through the operations: POCI-01-0145-36 FEDER-029130 (“mINSPIRE—mHealth to measure and improve adherence to medication in chronic respiratory diseases—generalisation and evaluation of gamification, peer support and advanced image processing technologies”) cofunded by the COMPETE2020 (Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização), Portugal 2020 and by Portuguese Funds through FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia). We aimed to identify persistent asthma phenotypes among adolescents and to evaluate longitudinally asthma-related outcomes across phenotypes. Adolescents (13-17 years) from the prospective, observational, and multicenter INSPIRERS studies, conducted in Portugal and Spain, were included (n = 162). Latent class analysis was applied to demographic, environmental, and clinical variables, collected at a baseline medical visit. Longitudinal differences in clinical variables were assessed at a 4-month follow-up telephone contact (n = 128). Three classes/phenotypes of persistent asthma were identified. Adolescents in class 1 (n = 87) were highly symptomatic at baseline and presented the highest number of unscheduled healthcare visits per month and exacerbations per month, both at baseline and follow-up. Class 2 (n = 32) was characterized by female predominance, more frequent obesity, and uncontrolled upper/lower airways symptoms at baseline. At follow-up, there was a significant increase in the proportion of controlled lower airway symptoms (p < 0.001). Class 3 (n = 43) included mostly males with controlled lower airways symptoms; at follow-up, while keeping symptom control, there was a significant increase in exacerbations/month (p = 0.015). We have identified distinct phenotypes of persistent asthma in adolescents with different patterns in longitudinal asthma-related outcomes, supporting the importance of profiling asthma phenotypes in predicting disease outcomes that might inform targeted interventions and reduce future risk.NOVA Medical School|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (NMS|FCM)Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC)Comprehensive Health Research Centre (CHRC) - pólo NMSRUNAmaral, RitaJácome, CristinaAlmeida, RutePereira, Ana MargaridaAlves-Correia, MagnaMendes, SandraRodrigues, José Carlos CidraisCarvalho, JoanaAraújo, LuísCosta, AlbertoSilva, ArmandinaTeixeira, Maria FernandaFerreira-Magalhães, ManuelAlves, Rodrigo RodriguesMoreira, Ana SofiaFernandes, Ricardo MFerreira, RosárioPinto, Paula LeiriaNeuparth, NBordalo, DianaBom, Ana TodoCálix, Maria JoséFerreira, TâniaGomes, JoanaVidal, CarmenMendes, AnaVasconcelos, Maria JoãoSilva, Pedro MoraisFerraz, JoséMorête, AnaPinto, Claúdia SofiaSantos, NatachaLoureiro, Claúdia ChavesArrobas, AnaMarques, Maria LuísLozoya, CarlosLopes, CristinaCardia, FranciscaLoureiro, Carla ChavesCâmara, RaquelVieira, InêsSilva, Sofia daSilva, EuricoRodrigues, NatalinaFonseca, João A2021-02-03T23:21:12Z2021-01-242021-01-24T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10362/111251eng1660-4601PURE: 27855565https://doi.org/10.3390/ijerph18031015info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2024-03-11T04:55:04Zoai:run.unl.pt:10362/111251Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-20T03:41:51.024702Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
