Mesteirais de Loulé: a regulamentação municipal dos ofícios (séculos XIV-XVI)

This work is part of the research developed under the MedCrafts project (PTDC/HAR-HIS/31427/2017). The goals of this project included creating an in-depth study of the activities of the craftsmen in Portugal, such as their organisation and productive structures, through the analysis of various sources, namely the records of municipal councils. Among the different cities and towns already studied - Braga, Guimarães, Porto, Coimbra, Santarém, Lisbon, Évora and Setúbal - there was an urgent need to reflect on the town of Loulé, whose records date back to the end of the 14th century, more precisely to 1384. Based on the available books for the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, it was possible to identify a plethora of activities associated with the daily life of the town and to recognise specific aspects of the regulation of the craft trades associated with them. Based on this survey, a comparison will be made with other Portuguese towns, seeking to identify the main demands of the craftsmen and the council resolutions concerning them.
