------ ABSTRACT ----- Altruistic behaviour, in which one animal seems to incur a cost in helping another, constitutes a problem for the theory of natural selection at the individual level. Hamilton iniroduced the concept of Inclusive Fitness and showed that a genetically determined altruistic behaviour could be selected for if it benefited relatives of the altruist, sharing with him the relevant genes. This type of selection is called Kin Selection and it can explain several phenomena, such as alarm calls, sterile castes, etc. It can occasionaliy be completed or replaced by other forces, such as Reciprod Altruism, which does not involve related individuals. |
