ABSTRACTThe present study focusses on the area of study of indexation, applied in university libraries, and the research is divided into three fundamental parts. At first, a theoretical study of the main concepts of Indexation was carried out which will allow to support the analysis performed. Subsequently, a study was carried out at the libraries of higher education institutions in Portugal with training in social work. From the application of a survey to the professionals of the Information Services (IS) it was intended to observe the indexing practices performed in this specific area of knowledge.In addition, some models of indexation practiced in the libraries integrated in international schools with higher education of Social Work, and the case of the library of the Oporto Institute of Social Work aka ISSSP. Finally, the proposal is made for a structured list of subjects, specifically in the field of social work, for the indexing of documents.The growing volume of documents, with greater representation in the area of Social Work, over 60 years of ISSSP activity, as well as the updating of the curricula of the subjects of the Degree on Social Work, arising from the changes intrinsically linked to each scientific area, put forward the need to adopt different working practices for Information Science professionals.In this context, there is a need to build mechanisms to control all technical-scientific terminology, especially in the field of social work, and the normalization of documentary language, fundamental for professionals and users of this service, in order to improve the efficiency of information retrieval, rationalize processes and standardize indexing practices.In short, with the accomplishment of this study, it is intended to improve the working procedures, during the indexing process of documents, in the host institution, and furthermore, to get an advantage in the specific indexing practices in the Social Work.Keywords: Indexing - Social Work - University libraries - Controlled vocabulary
