Resumo: The story of the museum coincides with the enthusiastic account of its slow, progressive and double transformation into an autonomous construction and public institution, independent of the private space and property. Although the concept house-museum has appeared only in the moment of the official and formal separation of the two places, it is possible to identify moments, facts, collections, spaces and buildings in which house and museum link together and breath from each other. From the recognition of the house-museum as an architectural object of patrimonial valour, which embraces both the everyday spaces of a certain character and time and the museum function of conservation, research and communication, our investigation focused in the transformation of private domestic places into public museum spaces, being the first ones the motive or pretext to the second ones.Aiming to know the intervention methodologies in the architectural patrimony used in such transformation processes, we have constructed a panorama of thirty-four Portuguese house-museum biographic and documental evolution from 1915 to 2005.After this it was possible to establish a general view and a comparative and interpretive analysis of several study-cases by identifying similarities and differences, sequences and ruptures, which mark consecutive steps of the growth of the house-museum space. __ The Master's dissertation was developed within the scope of the Master Programme Intervention Methodologies in Architectural Heritage of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Oporto, under the scientific orientation of Professor Doctor Architect Carlos Alberto Esteves Guimarães and the financial support of FCT. Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology) through the Fundo Social Europeu - III Quadro Comunitário de Apoio (European Social Fund - III Communitarian Support Board). __ 2007 BEST MUSEOLOGY WORK - Award given by the Associação Portuguesa de Museologia (Portuguese Museology Association).
