At least it was so until the advent of the digital medium - digital has provided and broaden the dissemination of information in both temporal and spatial terms, that is, it became possible to access information more immediately and practically anywhere. It is indisputable that the support that holds the book is in transformation as well as the reader's habits. The present study tries to understand the problematic around the book and the publication in the contemporaneity, exploring the preferences of the reader between the printed format and the digital one. Although it isn’t the primary focus of this research, defining the concept of a book becomes essential to understand what the book is to us and how important it is in our lives, and thus to predict how it might come to be in the future. The initial analysis of the book's history is the basis for understanding the printed book and how it evolved in technical and material terms. The need to investigate the future of the book comes from the observation of readers' behaviour towards the printed book and the digital book; the fact that we are reading more and more through the screen of an electronic device, whether it is the personal computer or the mobile phone, means that we are leaving the printed paper? This and other issues regarding the continuity of the printed book and whether the digital book will undoubtedly replace it are the motto for this research. In summary, this research intends to explore and approach the various hypotheses of materialization of the book in the future.
