Stylistic differences between two versions of Sextus Placitus' Liber medicine ex animalibus

Resumo: We provide a stylistic characterization of a high-medieval prescription text entitled Liber medicine ex quadrupedibus, comparing it with its main source, the Liber medicine ex animalibus by Sextus Placitus. We draw the conclusion that the style of the reworking is simpler and even plainer than that used by Sextus Placitus, as can be noticed, for instance, in the substitution of Greek technical lexicon for generic Latin equivalents. This type of replacement doesn’t occur in the sections deriving from other sources apart from the Liber medicine ex animalibus, thereby suggesting that different criteria might have been followed in the process of reworking. We also provide a critical comment on some excerpts of Sextus Placitus’ text which haven’t been correctly edited by Howald and Sigerist.

Se concluye que el estilo de la reelaboración es más simple e incluso vulgar que el de Sexto Plácido, lo cual se advierte por ejemplo en la sustitución del léxico técnico griego por equivalentes latinos genéricos. Este tipo de sustituciones no se da en las partes que proceden de fuentes distintas del Liber medicine ex animalibus, lo que indica que pudo haber diversidad de criterios en la reelaboración. También se hacen comentarios críticos sobre pasajes de la obra de Sexto Plácido que no fueron correctamente editados por Howald y Sigerist.Nous procédons à la caractérisation stylistique d'un ouvrage du haut Moyen Age intitulé Liber medicine ex quadrupedibus, en le comparant à sa source principale, le Liber medecine ex animalibus de Sextus Placitus. Nous concluons que le style du remaniement est plus simple et même plus vulgaire que celui de Sextus Placitus, comme nous pouvons le constater dans la substitution du lexique technique grec par des mots latins génériques. Ce procédé n’est pas utilisé dans les parties provenant d'autres sources que le Liber medecine ex animalibus, ce qui peut vouloir dire que plusieurs critères ont pu être suivis lors du remaniement. Nous procédons également à des commentaires critiques, à propos de passages de l’ouvrage de Sextus Placitus qui n’ont pas été correctement édités par Howald et Sigerist.Faz-se a caraterização estilística de um receitário alto-medieval intitulado Liber medicine ex quadrupedibus a partir da comparação com a sua fonte principal, o Liber medicine ex animalibus de Sexto Plácido. Conclui-se que o estilo da reelaboração é mais simples e mesmo vulgar do que o de Sexto Plácido, como se verifica, por exemplo, na substituição do léxico técnico grego por equivalentes latinos genéricos. Este tipo de substituições não se dá nas partes que procedem de fontes distintas do Liber medicine ex animalibus, e isso indica que pôde haver diversidade de critérios na elaboração.
