Resumo: | The constant development of the jewelry industry determines a need to take advantage of new technologies as a tool for differentiation of products and production methods. In a contemporary and complex society, this product differentiation depends not solely on technological advances and innovations, but mainly on innovation driven by design. The interaction between design, technology and culture has a strong potential to provide the jewelry industry the benefits of an innovative character, which this study intends to grasp. The observations presented in this dissertation demonstrate that technology serves as a technical support to facilitate the implementation of the design in the production of jewelry, contributing to the construction of identity, meaning and symbolic language in its products, in order to drive innovation in the creation and production of jewelry. The results obtained in this research can help practitioners and scholars in the field to make better use of technology to incorporate design in the conceptualization and production of innovative jewelry. To achieve the objective of this research, we resort to a case study which was divided into two parts. The first part is based on a critical analysis of literature, which seeks, at first, to clarify concepts related to design, technology, culture and innovation. Secondly, it seeks to analyze these concepts' potential, as well as their interaction in the design and production of jewelry. Using the principles of semiotics, we analyzed the phenomenon of producing meanings that we associate with objects of consumption in the cultural spectrum. The second part is based on a characterization of productive environments that welcome the interactions between design, technology and innovation in the creation and production of jewelry. To achieve this goal, we elaborated a compilation of material and technological resources used within the jewelry industry to exemplify how they facilitate incorporating design in the production of jewelry. We also sum up the observations discussed here. This research demonstrates how design and technology can add value to parts and contribute to innovation |
