Resumo: This essay aims to reflect on the relationship between History and fiction. Our goal is to develop the hypothesis that the Saramaguian text reveals a refined capacity for social interpretation, gained through life experience, the study of historical documents and historiography in general. These would have provided him with an ordered set of values, impressions and feelings, which were essential in the treatment of the sources, he used to write the fictional text. We suggest that the literature produced by the author appears in the form of a denunciation of the official narratives of History, which had been excluding otherness. We claim the possibility that Saramago artistically expresses a point of view that corresponds to a new type of historiography that wants to respond to the incompleteness of the common official versions.
