Psychotherapy vs psychopharmacology : assessment of portuguese family doctors’ knowledge and possible decision-influencing factors regarding the treatment of depressionFamily medicineDepressionPsychotherapyPsychopharmacologyDomínio/Área Científica::Ciências MédicasTrabalho Final do Curso de Mestrado Integrado em Medicina, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, 2022Introdução. Background. Portugal has one of the highest prevalence of depression, as well as one of the highest rates of antidepressant consumption. General Medicine and Family doctors are the most sought-after professionals on mental health-related issues, measuring up to more than 80% of its providers in Portugal, also being one of the biggest antidepressants prescribers. Objectives. To assess the knowledge General Medicine and Family doctors have on the appropriate criteria used to choose between psychotherapy and psychopharmacology for their patients with depression, as well as to determine the existence of other decision-influencing factors. Methods. An original online survey, composed of 26 questions, and open to all General Medicine and Family doctors working in Portugal was carried out, with a descriptive statistical analysis and an inferential data analysis using non-parametric tests being conducted. Before being distributed, the questionnaire was examined by several colleagues and doctors. Results. A total of 331 answers were received. When assessing the knowledge on the criteria for treatment with psychotherapy or antidepressants, the correct option was the most selected, with 50% of the doctors getting the majority of answers correctly. No major differences between age groups, stages of professional career, or ARS were identified. Most participants (95%) claimed there was, at least, one psychologist in their ACES, although 90% considered their support as insufficient. The average waiting period for referral was 5.1 months, with relevant differences registered between ARS. The lack of response and the average waiting period were identified as important decision-influencing factors. Conclusion. General Medicine and Family doctors have good global knowledge regarding the indications for choosing psychotherapy or antidepressants as first-line treatment, with the preference for antidepressants seemingly due to the inability of the public psychology services to respond to the referrals.Oliveira, Alda Pereira da SilvaLopes, SandraRepositório da Universidade de LisboaSalvado, Ana Filipa de Magalhães2022-072022-07-01T00:00:00Z2024-06-20T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10451/56392TID:203139089enginfo:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessreponame:Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos)instname:Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãoinstacron:RCAAP2023-11-08T17:03:53Zoai:repositorio.ul.pt:10451/56392Portal AgregadorONGhttps://www.rcaap.pt/oai/openaireopendoar:71602024-03-19T22:06:54.534940Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (Repositórios Cientìficos) - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento (UMIC) - FCT - Sociedade da Informaçãofalse |
