O fenómeno do suicídio no Alentejo: estudo das narrativas dos sujeitos que tentaram o suicídio

O suicídio é um sério problema de saúde pública. Todos os anos morrem no mundo cerca de um milhão de pessoas por suicídio (OMS, 2014). Em Portugal ocorrem, aproximadamente, mil suicídios por ano, existindo algumas especificidades na distribui-ção destas mortes pelas regiões deste pequeno país que conferem uma importância acrescida ao estudo deste fenómeno. A região do Alentejo, no sul do país, apresenta taxas superiores a 20 por 100.000 habitantes que são sobreponíveis às mais elevadas do mundo, em clara discrepância com o norte de Portugal onde o número de suicídios se estima que seja 10 vezes menor (Alte da Veiga & Braz Saraiva, 2009; Freitas & Bo-tega, 2002). De forma a contribuir para o conhecimento deste fenómeno, propomo-nos neste estudo a conhecer melhor como as pessoas da microcultura alentejana que ten-taram o suicídio significam esta experiência de vida. Para tal, 14 adultos, residentes na região do Alentejo foram entrevistados com o objetivo de aceder aos significados sobre os quais estes edificam a sua tentativa de suicídio. Após a análise dos dados assim recolhidos, os resultados sugerem que as tentativas de suicídio levadas a cabo pelos participantes estão fortemente associadas ao fim do sofrimento, desesperança e deses-pero. Surgem como emoções/sentimentos predominantes no período anterior à tenta-tiva de suicídio a tristeza, a revolta, a rejeição e a frustração. São apontadas como prin-cipais motivações pelos participantes a depressão, os problemas interpessoais e ainda, a incompreensão por parte de outros significativos. Na sequência da tentativa de suicí-dio, o sentimento de arrependimento/vergonha é o mais prevalecente no discurso dos participantes. Estes identificam ainda diversas mudanças pessoais e interpessoais na sequência da tentativa que permitem olhar a experiência de tentativa de suicídio de uma outra forma, assumindo a mesma um caráter transformador. Demonstram após esta experiência uma nova atitude e forma de encarar a vida e os problemas; ABSTRACT: The Suicide Phenomenon in Alentejo: Study of the Narratives of the subjects who tried to commit suicide Suicide is a serious public health problem. Approximately one million people die of suicide every year (WHO, 2014). Approximately one thousand suicides occur in Portugal per year. There are some specificities in the distribution of these deaths in the regions of this small country, which add an important importance to the study of this phenomenon. The region of Alentejo, in the south of the country, has rates of over 20 per 100,000 inhabitants that are superimposed on the highest in the world, in clear dis-crepancy with the north of Portugal where the number of suicides is estimated to be 10 times lower (Alte da Veiga & Braz Saraiva, 2009; Freitas & Botega, 2002). In order to contribute to the knowledge of this phenomenon, we propose in this study to know better how the people of Alentejo microculture who tried suicide signify this life experience. To this end, 14 adults living in the Alentejo region were interviewed in order to access the meanings on which they build their suicide attempt. After analyzing the data thus collec-ted, the results suggest that the suicide attempts carried out by the participants are stron-gly associated with the end of suffering, hopelessness and despair. The predominant emotions / feelings in the period prior to the suicide attempt appear to be sadness, revolt, rejection, and frustration. Depression, interpersonal problems, and incomprehension by significant others are the main motivations of the participants. Following the suicide attempt, the feeling of regret / shame is most prevalent in the participants' speech. These also identify several personal and interpersonal changes following the attempt to look at the experience of suicide attempt in another way, assuming the same a transformative character. They demonstrate after this experience a new attitude and way of looking at life and problems.
