Resumo: The main caregiver burden is an important concern, which arouses interest, not only in research, but also in assessment tools, like the Zarit Burden Interview that evaluates the main caregiver burden on different levels. Objective: Validating the Zarit’s scale (“Zarit Burden Interview”) for the Portuguese Population in the field of domiciliary palliative patient care. Methodology: Methodological and quantitative research, applied to a sample of 104 caregivers of palliative patients, scattered throughout the country. This study describes the construction and evaluates the psychometric characteristics of the scale. Results: The internal consistency evaluation was performed using the Cronbach’s Alpha, the value obtained was 0,884. The total of the average scores in the Zarit’s Scale for this group of caregivers was 37,26, a value pointing to moderate overload. From the statistics analyses, we identified five factors. Conclusion: The “Zarit Burden Interview” (overload scale) has good psychometric characteristics, reason to applying to the main caregivers of patients in context of domiciliary palliative care in the Portuguese population.

Conclusion: The “Zarit Burden Interview” (overload scale) has good psychometric characteristics, reason to applying to the main caregivers of patients in context of domiciliary palliative care in the Portuguese population.
