Universidade de LisboaPoaceae is one of the most diverse plant groups, and particularly well adapted to arid environments. In Cabo Verde archipelago, West Africa, the Poaceae family is one of the largest, occurring in a wide variety of habitats, from humid mountain areas to coastal drylands. Occurring in great diversity and being a good source of valuable crops and of Crop Wild Relatives (CWR) that are essential for crop improvement, the Poaceae in this archipelago are a good model for investigation. This dissertation has two main goals: i) to study the distribution patterns of Poaceae species and understand the climatic and topographic aspects influencing them in Cabo Verde; and ii) to provide new approaches to the conservation of important genetic resources of grass species, in order to ensure food security in this archipelago. For those purposes, a holistic approach was used integrating different methods in ecology (Chapter 2), plant genetic resources and conservation biology (Chapter 3), based on an extensive inventory of the Cabo Verde grasses. The results (Chapter 2) showed that species diversity (absolute values) decrease with altitude, with annual species dominating the grass flora. Although fewer, the species performing C3 photosynthesis present well defined distribution patterns, occurring at higher altitudes mainly exposed to the northeast trade winds. In Chapter 3, the first CWR inventory for Cabo Verde grasses is presented, revealing that 26 taxa relate to important crops (e.g. fonio, sorghum and millets), which are also relevant in the African continent. Most CWR biodiversity hotspots are outside protected areas, and only Sorghum bicolor is represented in germplasm banks.
