Resumo: The paper intends to analyse the innovation capacity in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) establishing the spatial distribution of the potential for innovation by means of a territorial indicator. The indicator has as variables the workers occupied in research and development (R&D), the R&D firms, the advanced services firms, and potentially innovative productive structure. The results of the analysis show a network of cities with an important capacity to innovate.
