This change of habits is most common among young adults who resort to social media for all kinds of data and information searches. As the world is becoming more connected while being “disconnected”, several consequences have seemed to appear in the generations that grew up around social media platforms. This research aims to explore and understand the factors that can influence the perception of adults’ body image as a result of Instagram usage by integrating two theories: social comparison theory and objectification theory. Moreover, our study takes into consideration demographic variables and personal factors. To assess our model, a questionnaire was conducted focusing on 536 adults that use Instagram, revealing that social appearance comparison and body surveillance significantly impact the relationship between the use of Instagram and body image perception.
