The (inter)cultural knowledge conveyed in a Chinese PFL teaching manual: contents and learning path

Resumo: In the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language, one of the goals to be achieved is the development of intercultural competence. The textbook is a relevant resource to access this component. The aim of the present study is to analyze the cultural knowledge conveyed in a Portuguese as a foreign language textbook, Português para Ensino Universitário. We base our study on the Intercultural Communicative Competence model and on the perspective that considers several cultures to be relevant to language teaching and learning. This methodology involved identifying and categorizing the (inter)cultural elements of the textbook. The results highlight the domains of geography, social identity and groups, as well as socialization and lifecycle. The Portuguese culture acquires salience when compared to those of other Portuguese-speaking countries. Chinese culture is also taken as a reference, in association with the contexts and participants in communication situations. Regarding the teaching-learning process, a reinforcement of the cultural dimension is seen to take place between the first and second volume of the textbook.

O manual constitui um recurso relevante para aceder a essa componente. O objetivo do presente estudo é analisar os conhecimentos culturais veiculados num manual de PLE, Português para Ensino Universitário. Fundamo-nos no modelo da Competência Comunicativa Intercultural e na perspetiva que considera diversas culturas relevantes para o ensino-aprendizagem de línguas.
