Introduction: The growing interest in the disturbance or symptoms of the binge eating is associated to its high comorbidity with different conditions, like obesity, as well as psychiatric symptoms, inherent complications once the disease is identified and growing prevalence rates. As a complex, multidetermined and multifaceted phenomenon, it is crucial to continue exploring its correlates. The body itself can potentiate the awakening of traumatic memories, due to the psychological and emotional pain related to those memories. Therefore, the difficulties of emotional processing (which are true markers of the traumatic processes lived by the individual) limit the ability of the individual to regulate the satisfaction of its basic needs. That leads to emotional deregulation and increases distress and symptomatology, leading to binge eating. Said that, the main goals of this study are: to explore if the living of traumatic experiences (different areas) and the difficulties in emotional regulation are associated with each other and with symptoms of binge eating; to analyze if the difficulties of emotional regulation mediate the relation between traumatic experiences and binge eating symptoms. Methodology: 421 college students and adults from the general population (women, n = 300, 71,3%) answered to a social-demographic quiz, the Traumatic Events Checklist (TEC), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and the Binge Eating Scale (BES). Results: There were identified light and moderate binge eating prevalence values (5,9%), as well as severe binge eating prevalence values (2,6%), which are similar to the results found in national studies that used BES. The total BES score is positively associated with family trauma, total of traumatic experiences (TEC), impulses, self-rejection, lack of consciousness, emotional lucidity (DERS) and BMI. The total score of BES/binge eating was significantly built by the weight as a child, the BMI, the total of traumatic experiences and the strategies factor (DERS). It was not found any relation of mediation. Discussion: This study with college students and individuals from the general population revealed how important it can be to evaluate and consider the traumatic life experiences of the ill individual. It allowed a better perception of the difficulties these people face when trying to create an emotional regulation when being treated and in a case where there are binge eating symptoms.
