The offensive in Iraq and Syria and the subsequent retraction of Daesh raises doubts about the future of Islamic jihad. Regardless of its transnational configurations, its global projection, the even more diffuse nature of the terrorist threat in the near future, the prevention of jihadist radicalization as a cause of Islamist-based terrorism has been a priority in the prevention of terrorism following the recent terrorist attacks on European soil. Strategies to prevent radicalization should be based on respect for Human Rights and the rule of law. They should be designed in a multidisciplinary way, involving the participation of various actors, including the police. In Portugal, the Security Forces have in their mission the essence of community policing. In addition to the missions that are part of the community policing, they also perform tasks of a different nature, whether of public order, criminal investigation, intelligence, or administrative police in certain areas, and contribute to the prevention of the jihadist radicalization. With the present work, we have studied the conceptual models of radicalization, identified the strategies for its prevention and analyzed the approaches of community policing in the prevention of jihadist radicalization. We have seen the role of the local police, PSP and the GNR, as a center for the prevention of radicalization, as entities that know the communities, that have the capacity to detect and interpret early signs of radicalization, and that work with a wide variety of local entities can be, with the necessary framework, entities that congregate and promote the necessary articulation and cooperation in the prevention of jihadist radicalization.
