Resumo: This article presents an analysis of the play À flor da peleby Brazilian playwright Consuelo de Castro, written in 1969, during the Brazilian military civil dictatorship. It is intended to demonstrate that the text can be better understood by using the concept of allegory, as defined by the philosopher Walter Benjamin. Following this reading, allegorical language shifts the parameters of the traditional dramatic form of European origin, modifying it through confrontation with the Brazilian historical context of the period. This historical reality, fractured by the dictatesof the State of Exception, generated a particular kind of negative drama, which we seek to expose in this article.
