The concept of public sculpture is analysed through the changes the visual arts have undergone over time. In a generalized approach, it follows that philosophy and aesthetics, which were the foundations of the works prevailing throughout Europe as well as in the rest of the country, showed up late in the sculptures found in the Algarve. Some of the great Portuguese artists of the nineteenth century are represented by public sculptures from the beginning of the twentieth century. The public sculptures up to beginning of the seventies have the hallmark of the Estado Novo and falls under the aegis of the Política do Espírito. Still during this political period, one particular sculpture was erected which broke with the traditional form of public art. Following the political revolution on April 25, throughout the seventies and the eighties, the new political opening allowed the diversification on the themes addressed and the excessive triumphalism placed on monuments gave way to all sorts of topics affecting the daily lives of populations. During the nineties there was a burst as far as creativity is concerned and the region moves towards the production of a huge quantity of sculptures, initiating a period in which new materials and techniques were used to develop the ideas. The three-dimensional works hitherto exclusively produced by Portuguese artists has the contribution of foreign sculptors. In nine years of the 21st century alone, there was a far higher number of works erected in the Algarve than in the two previous centuries put together.
