Resumo: Sarah is known as a wife and as a mother. She was married to Abraham, and she was the mother of Isaac, both patriarchs of Israel. Her husband led her to a nomadic life, together with other family members, in search of the Promised Land. Christian authors highlight those attributes that will serve as inspiration and example for women believers: beauty, chastity, obedience and submission. In addition, from a symbolic reading of the book of Genesis, they conceive Sara as a prefiguration of the Virgin Mary. Although the three French authors, whose texts are included in our corpus, show her as an example, they treat her differently. For Chevalier de la Tour Landry, she embodies humbleness and loyalty, the virtues why God saved her life; according to both Mesnagier and Christine de Pizan, Sarah represents kindness, saintliness and chastity. We will examine the role she plays in these three texts, as well as the development of the stereotype until becoming a rooted example of virtue in medieval society.
